She Heads Broadcasters In Georgia

AUGUSTA, Ga.—Velvet L. Perry, vice president and general manager of Perry Broadcasting of Augusta, has been elected president of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters.

Perry Broadcasting of Augusta owns five radio stations that broadcast in Augusta, as well as in areas of South Carolina.

The Augusta firm is part of Perry Publishing & Broadcasting, which also owns radio stations throughout Oklahoma and in Fayetteville, Ark.

It is the largest independently-owned and Black-owned broadcasting company in the nation.

The firm also owns The Black Chronicle, which has subscribers in every state in the continental United States and in some foreign countries.

The publication is the largest paid-circulation weekly newspaper in Oklahoma.

In her position, Miss Perry is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the five Augusta stations, and directs the programming, marketing and sales, engineering and human resources departments of Perry Broadcasting of Augusta.

Under her leadership, the firm has become a leading fixture in Augusta as a civic and entertainment participant, that having been achieved in a highly competitive market.

For example, the firm annually sponsors Augusta’s largest community back-to-school event for children of Richmond County, with which youngsters receive back packs, school supplies and free haircuts.

Also, the group of stations sponsors a MayFest, an annual family-oriented concert featuring national recording stars at which outstanding citizens are recognized.

In addition, the company sponsors an annual St. Jude Radiothon. (In 2015, that event raised $61,000 that was contributed to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital to benefit local children.

The company broadcasts live all Lucy Craft Laney high school varsity boys football games, and varsity boys and girls basketball games.

The company and the Richmond County Parks & Recreation Department co-sponsor annual Easter egg hunts and a Halloween events.

She is a member of the boards of directors of the Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau, Augusta Technical College, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta, the Georgia Association of Broadcasters and the Lucy Craft Laney Museum.

The Perry Broadcasting of Augusta vice president and general manager serves on the Small, Mid-Size Committee of the National Association of Broadcasters.

In 2013, she was named one of Radio’s Future African-American Leaders by Radio, Inc., and was the recipient of the Sponsorship Award presented by the Augusta branch of the NAACP.

In 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, she was the recipient of Black History Platinum Awards presented by the Lucy Craft Laney Museum.

She was presented National Guard Public service Awards by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters in 2012 and 2015.

The Lee M. Beard Humanitarian Award was presented to her in 2010 by the Augusta chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and she was presented a Media Award for support and Dedication to the Growth of Community Arts in Augusta by the Greater Augusta Arts Council in 2008.

She is an alumnus of the Leadership Augusta Executive Forum.

A native of Oklahoma, she is a graduate of Spelman College with a bachelor of arts degree, having majored in English.
